Community Welfare - Women Aid Trust

Since its inception, WAT has been engaged in a range of community welfare activities, which are availed by the economically weak sections of the communities. These may be divided into four areas and are outlined below.

General Community Welfare Services:

WAT’s community welfare efforts include:

  • A skill development program, under which computer, sewing and embroidery skills are imparted to girls for their personal development as well as to provide them a means of earning;
  • Thrift shops, for which WAT volunteers collect new and used household items that are sold at very nominal prices to the needy.
  • A Ramazan package, wherein dry rations and clothes are distributed to the poor in the community and at the women and juvenile wards of jails.
  • An informal job assistance scheme through which poor people are assisted in finding employment commensurate with their abilities.
  • A marriage gift scheme, in which a gift package including household items and clothing is provided to the parents of the bride and groom, and the groom’s parents are assisted in hosting a small Valima reception (WAT discourages marriage receptions hosted by the bride’s family).

Educational Services:

In 1995 WAT formed the Pakistan Educational Network (PEN), which focuses on promoting education among poor communities through awareness campaigns, literacy projects, and financial support to students in the form of sponsorships, monthly stipends and yearly donation of course books.

Life and Health Services:

WAT’s volunteer force includes a panel of qualified medical practitioners who offer a range of services to help the poor and needy receive quality health care. These services include weekly clinics at WAT centers and to women prisoners in jails and quarterly medical camps at the community level, along with the distribution of medicines. Patients with complex health problems are referred to specialists on our panel.

Emergency Relief Fund:

In addition to its regular activities, WAT participates wherever it can to alleviate hardships caused by emergency situations, such as floods and refugee influx and natural clematis. Most recently WAT had setup an Extended Care Facility for women and children for the earth quack- affected areas of Kashmir.
